Next i placed the rail hardware at the mark and close to flush with the end of the board. Two into the 2x4 side of the legs and six into the 2x6 side of the leg. Repeat these steps to make the other half of the bed frame. Rather i used spruce lumber normally used for framing.

Bed rails are similar to frames but they re missing the metal slats at the head and foot of the bed. This grid of screws creates a lot of conflicting geometry that will prevent racking of the entire bed. Each inside corner of the bed frame receives 8 screws to mount the frames to the legs. The middle cross members get placed at 13 and 27 inches on the frame. This ended up being a heavy but very sturdy bed frame.

Reply 4 years ago. I used three 2x8 s one 2x6 one 2x10 and two 2x2 s. The bed rails each have a 2x2 1 5 x1 5 attached to the bottom inside edge on which the slats supporting the mattress rest. Add bed frame rail hardware.

The image at left is a cross section of the bed illustrating this. Most of that wood was 2x6 boards. I lowered the inside frame so that the mattress sits 1 inch below the top of the 2x6. Keep reading to see how we accomplished this design challenge.
